The business of war

During World War Two the Docks in Southampton became a target for enemy bombers.  Many buildings in and around the docks were hit.  The South Western Hotel was taken over by the Royal Navy for the duration of the war.  Barrage balloons were used to try and protect the docks from dive bombers and it also had its own teams of ARP workers and a fire service.  These images give an idea of Southampton's dock area during the War.
