Ports are different
Ports have always had an exciting, edgy and slightly dangerous
atmosphere that attracts people. This is partly due to the
many people who pass through them. This includes ships` crews
and passengers, of many different nationalities. It is also
because ports usually have good facilities to cater for their needs
and desires. Contrast this with market towns. In the past people and
families tended to stay close to where they had been born and not
move far. Everyone knew each other; their families may have lived
there for centuries and they valued their respectability. A
port city with its ever-changing population did not have the same
elements of stability or closeness of community. It it was a
place where people could go for anonymity and to let their hair
down!
