Southampton Docks police force

Magnifying glassSouthampton Docks police force

The work of loading and unloading ships often means that valuable items are left lying around, offering great temptation. To try to prevent theft, most docks have high walls and fences around them. Ports also employ a police force to check those passing through the gates. The port police also try to ensure law-abiding behaviour in the many people who come and go to the port. Other duties include directing visitors and those delivering goods to a particular ship.

Some ports used to have their own police force, separate from the local town or county`s force. At others, a national body called the British Transport Police did the work. Today, private security companies often do many of the jobs of the port police.
