Info On A Port
Information on a port
Most ports have websites, which will provide basic information
about their facilities, and perhaps about their current
trades. The website will give you a contact address, and from
the port`s office you should be able to get a copy of the port
handbook or map. Histories of most major ports have been published, and local
reference libraries will have copies. Be aware that these may
not bring the story right up to date. Much has changed since
the 1980s, especially port ownership. PortCities web sites will also give you much about the history
of the ports of Bristol [www.discoveringbristol.org.uk],
Hartlepool [portcities.hartlepool.gov.uk],
Liverpool [www.mersey-gateway.org],
London [www.portcities.org.uk/london],
and Southampton. Port authorities have an excellent record of keeping their
archives, and putting them into local record offices. Often
the records will include highly detailed minute books, letter
books, accounts, plans for new developments and even records of
which ships called. It is also worth contacting local history groups as their
members may have a particular interest in the port. They may
have produced relevant publications.
