Visiting
Visiting ports and shipsHow can I visit a port?Unfortunately, ports are discouraging visitors at present (2003). Concerns about terrorism have made them very security conscious. Although many people with legitimate business have access, the issuing of permits for visits is ceasing at many ports. It is still worth approaching the port authority for permission to visit, but be aware that this may be refused. How can I visit a ship?To request a visit, contact the shipowner or his agent in the port. Shipowners' addresses will be found in the up-to-date edition of Lloyd's Register’s List of Shipowners. For agents, look in the local Yellow Pages™. Remember that ships are often in port for very short periods, and in some cases it might not be possible to predict when the ship will arrive or sail until a few days beforehand.
