Transatlantic milestones

Many developments in steamships and long-distance travel happened across the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some notable events.

These milestones only refer to ships crossing the Atlantic.

1819First crossing of the Atlantic by Savannah
1838British & American Steam Navigation Company is the first shipping line to start transatlantic operations
First crossing of the Atlantic by a purpose-built steamer by Great Western
1840Cunard's Britannia is the first Atlantic steamship to receive a subsidy for carrying mail
1845Great Britain is the first transatlantic iron steamship and the first with a screw propeller 
1855Ericsson is the first four-funnelled transatlantic steamer 
1856Cunard Persia is the first paddle steamer made of iron
1871Adriatic is the first to have gas lighting 
1873City of Richmond is the first ship to have hot and cold running water in cabins 
1876Amerique is the first ship to have electric lights 
The last voyage of a paddle steamer made by Scotia
1893Campania is the first ship to have en suite rooms and dedicated single-berth cabins 
1899US ship St Paul is the first to have a ship-to-shore wireless telegraph and the first to have an ocean newspaper
1905Victorian is the first ship to have steam turbines 
German liner Amerika is the first to have an à la carte restaurant
1907Lusitania is the first ship to have four screws 
1908Rotterdam is the first to have a glass-enclosed promenade deck 
1914Aquitania is the last four-funnelled steamer to be completed 
1935Normandie is the first turbo-electric ship, and the first to exceed 80,000 tons 
1947Media is the first passenger liner to be built after World War Two 
1949Aquitania is withdrawn from service - the last four-funnelled liner
1964Savannah is the first nuclear-powered ship to cross the Atlantic
1967Queen Mary is withdrawn - the last three-funnelled steamer in service
1977The first supersonic passenger flight of a Concorde aircraft across the Atlantic
