Current editions of Lloyd`s Register of Ships
provide similar information to the volumes for the 1930s but give
more detail, including: - Lloyd`s Register number: a unique number, unchanged from one
edition to another. Also known as the IMO number because these
numbers are used by the International Maritime Organization.
- satellite communications equipment
- deadweight [definition] tonnage
- type of vessel: e.g. general cargo, tug, tanker
- yard number
- cargo facilities:
- derricks [definition], cranes and
winches for loading and unloading
- number of containers carried
- roll-on, roll-off capabilities, i.e. whether vehicles can drive
on
- number and lengths of holds for cargo
- dimensions of hatches
- various cargo capacities including insulated space
- number of passengers
- additional details of machinery, including:
- type of diesel engine (e.g. MAN, Sulzer)
- power output in kiloWatts (kW) and brake horsepower [definition]
(bhp)
- generators
Recent editions have a card listing these column headings, to be
used alongside the register. The cards are printed in different
languages (English is on a white card, French on a green card) and
