Vessels in British government wartime service
Large numbers of British and foreign merchant ships were taken
over by the government during the First and Second World Wars for
service as transports of auxiliary ships. There are listed, with
their dates of service and a very abbreviated indication of their
use, in typescript Service Lists. Copies of
the Service Lists for both the wars are in the
Guildhall Library [address], the
National Maritime Museum [address]
and for the Second World War with the World Ship Society [address]. For details of actual voyages made by ships under government
control during wartime (which were published on a very restricted
basis), see
shipping movements.
