National Registers

Registers produced by these classification societies or government bodies may give details of vessels owned in the country they cover, but do not appear in Lloyd`s Register of Ships. These include small vessels and those only used in harbours or inland waterways. Note that some registers, including Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd and the Hellenic Register of Shipping list many ships owned or operated outside the countries in which they are based.

  • American Bureau of Shipping [address]
  • Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (based in Indonesia)
  • Bulgarian Register of Shipping
  • Bureau Veritas [address ] (based in France)
  • China Classification Society (based in China - mainland)
  • China Corporation Register of Shipping (based in China - Taiwan)
  • Det Norske Veritas [ address] (based in Norway)
  • Germanischer Lloyd [ address] (based in Germany)
  • Hellenic Register of Shipping (based in Greece)
  • Hrvatski Registar Brodova d.o.o. (based in Croatia)
  • Indian Register of Shipping
  • Joson Classification Society (based in North Korea)
  • Korean Register of Shipping (based in South Korea)
  • Nippon Kaiji Kyokai [address] (based in Japan)
  • Polski Rejstr Statkow (based in Poland)
  • Registro Italiana Navale (based in Italy)
  • Romanian Register of Shipping
  • Russian Maritime Register of Shipping

Of these, the Repertoire General of Bureau Veritas is particularly significant. Published from 1870 to 1939 it provided a list of all vessels Bureau Veritas could locate throughout the world. The first edition included well over 60,000 sail and steam vessels. Although less detailed, early editions gave far wider coverage than Lloyd`s Register of Ships, which did not catch up until 1886 when it issued its Universal Register .

Unfortunately, there is no library in the UK known to have a substantial collection of such registers, although the World Ship Society [address] has a number and embassy libraries may have copies. Those linked above are produced by classification societies which have offices in the UK; click on these for contact details.
