| Unique ID: | 2826 | | Description: | Photograph. The Floating Bridge linking Southampton with Woolston began service in November 1836. In 1850 Brannon wrote "it is certainly a great public convenience, as it takes but four minutes to cross the Itchen". It remained the most convenient way of crossing the Itchen between Southampton and Woolston until it was replaced by the Itchen Bridge in 1977. This photograph shows the almost complete bridge and one of the Floating Bridge ferries at the Woolston side. | | Creator: | Unknown | | Date: | 1977 | | Copyright: | Southampton City Council | | Partner: | SCC Libraries | | Partner ID: | Unknown |
