Description:Photograph. Pilots have been guiding ships in the Solent area since the 17th century. It is their job to guide the ships from the docks to the open seas. They are also responsible for maneouvering ships within the docks. Until the 1980s Pilots were self-employed, but worked under the authority and licence of Trinity House. They were transferred to the jurisdiction of the port authorities (ABP in Southampton) in 1988.
