| Unique ID: | 5311 | | Description: | Photograph. There has been a docks police force in Southampton since 1838 when two men were employed to watch over the works and equipment whilst the docks were being built. From 1839 the two men wore police uniforms and assumed responsibility for the preservation of law and order within the docks. The size of the force grew gradually as the docks expanded. In 1892 the force consisted of an Inspector, 3 sergeants, 11 constables and 2 plain clothed constables. This photograph is undated, but probably dates from c1890. | | Creator: | Unknown | | Date: | 1890 | | Copyright: | Associated British Ports plc | | Partner: | SCC Libraries | | Partner ID: | Unknown |
