Freighter Passengers
Informality
Freighter voyages were popular with those who did not like the
formal atmosphere of bigger passenger liners. They got to
know the officers and crew, saw them at work, and saw ports the
passenger ships did not call at. The passengers had to be
flexible, however. Cargo took preference over their needs,
and the ship`s schedule could change at short notice. Although it practically died out with the decline of passenger
travel by sea, freighter travel has enjoyed a revival. Some
container ships have been built with passenger cabins.
However, it remains much more expensive than air travel, as the
passengers have to be fed and looked after for weeks on
end.
