Itchen Wharves
Itchen Wharves
The River Itchen marks the eastern edge of Southampton's port. Scattered along the river were many small wharves and quays where boats were repaired and maintained. Storage warehouses lined the river banks, owned by companies like British American Tobacco and Fear Colebook (grain importers). Boats used for coastal trade were also based on the Itchen. Rows of houses were built in the area, many demolished in the slum clearances of the 1960s. At the mouth of the river was Thorneycroft's shipyard, next to the Itchen ferry. The ferry has since been replaced by a road bridge.
