Map of Itchen, South and Test Quays
The Itchen Quays were opened in stages between 1875 and 1892.
Lying on the River Itchen they provided facilities for cargo, mail
and vehicle shipment. At the south end of the docks is South Quay,
followed by the Test Quays, opened in 1902. Used mainly by
Union-Castle services to South Africa, the cold storage and ice
warehouse was located at these berths with timber sheds behind. The maps in this section show Southampton as it was in 1944. The numbers on the map mark the locations of individual berths.
