Map of Ocean and Empress Docks

The Empress Dock was opened by Queen Victoria in 1890 and has the largest basin in Southampton docks. 1940s traffic through the docks was mainly mail and bananas, although troopships were regularly berthed here. The Ocean Dock was built in 1911 for the use of White Star liners. The art deco-style Ocean Terminal at Berths 43 and 44 was opened in 1950 for the use of passengers boarding liners here.
