Southampton has been a major port for centuries. Town Quay was one of the areas where vessels would moor to trade their goods. In the 1920s, the area later became home to Southampton`s floating dock. Passengers for the Channel Islands and Le Havre departed from the Royal Pier, opened in 1833.
