Since 1843, the passengers and cargo passing through Southampton's
docks have brought prosperity to the town. Discover the story of

The River Itchen flows 27 miles (43 km) from north Hampshire to
Southampton Water. Many small shipping industries and communities
grew up along the river.
Over 600 civilians died in Southampton in air raids during the
Second World War and over 900 buildings were destroyed. Find out

Southampton's relationship with flying boats and seaplanes
stretched over forty-five years of exciting developments in
aviation, leading to the founding of the first national airline.

In 2003 Southampton City Museums Archaeological Society (SCMAS) began a photographic survey of Southampton's historic buildings. The project involved photographing all the buildings on the first series Ordnance Survey 25" map (1867-1881) that are still standing.
