About Us
PortCities consortium
PortCities Southampton is part of the PortCities consortium, a
group of maritime sites from across the UK. PortCities is made up
of UK museums, archives and libraries who have come together to
open up access to their collections of images, sound and other
objects by making them available on the internet. The PortCities
websites draw on these digitised materials to engage people in the
collections and to unearth stories of the people, places and events
that lie underneath. PortCities is made possible by a grant from the New Opportunities Fund
(NOF). NOF distributes National Lottery money to health, education
and environment projects across the UK. NOFs 50 million
pound EnrichUK programme enables information
that supports learning opportunities to be put into digitised form.
Grant winners, like PortCities Southampton, are developing learning
materials covering a wide range of topics to promote lifelong
learning. The other PortCities sites are in Bristol, Hartlepool, Liverpool and London.
