Wreck reports
In 1876, the first Wreck Report was published by
the Board of Trade. Since then, the British government has
investigated most serious shipping accidents (not just wrecks) and
published them as wreck reports. They are sometimes also
called Formal Investigations because the Merchant
Shipping Acts give legal power to investigate the accidents,
and Reports of Court, because a special court sits to
give its verdict. Southampton Central Library`s Maritime Collection has the
fullest set of wreck reports available to the general public. They
may be viewed without appointment while the library is open, and
photocopies can be made and sold to those unable to visit in
person. We are now adding wreck reports for the period 1930-1945 to the
PortCities Southampton website. We are also transcribing the
reports so that you can search them. To search for a wreck report, type the name of the ship in the
search box at the top right of this page, or
browse all the wreck reports online.
