The coming of the great linersPrevNext

The start of the 20th century saw a new surge in passenger traffic from Southampton. White Star Line transferred their New York service from Liverpool to the port in 1907. At the same time, the size of liners was increasing - many of the largest liners now had four funnels. During World War 1, passenger liners became targets for German submarines - the sinking of Lusitania being the most famous. Back in Southampton, the seeds were being planted for a faster way to travel long distances - by flying boat.
