The turbine
Nuclear ships
The steam turbine is likely to survive only in nuclear-powered craft. A nuclear reactor produces heat to raise steam which is fed into a conventional steam turbine. The few nuclear-powered merchant ships built have not been welcome in most ports round the world because of safety and environmental concerns. Nuclear-powered submarines, aircraft carriers and ice breakers have proved successful and relatively safe, and naval use of nuclear power and steam turbines looks set to continue.
