| Unique ID: | 3378 | | Description: | Engraving from a drawing by r.j. coles. South Stoneham House was built by Thomas Dummer of London between 1705 and 1708. The architect may have been Nicholas Hawksmmoor. The property was sold to William Sloane, brother of the founder of the British Museum, in 1740. By 1819 it had passed in to the hands of the Fleming family, who held the property until the late 19th century. In 1888 the house and estate were bought by Sir Samuel Montagu (later Lord Swaythling), later passing to the University. The large porch was added by Lord Swaythling. | | Creator: | Unknown | | Date: | 1900 | | Copyright: | Southampton City Council | | Partner: | SCC Libraries | | Partner ID: | Unknown |
