On January 31, 1941 Southampton, which had been devastated by the Blitz in the last two months of 1940, was visited by the Prime Minister Winston Churchill. He met the Mayor and other civic dignitaries at the Civic Centre, toured the areas most effected by bombing and inspected the civil defence forces. With him was Harry Hopkins, the special envoy of the US President Roosevelt.
