"KORAAGA" (S.S.).
NEW SOUTH WALES NAVIGATION ACT, 1901.
IN THE COURT OF MARINE INQUIRY
HOLDEN AT SYDNEY. | No. 3 of 1931. |
DECISION OF THE COURT.
In the matter of a Formal Inquiry held at Sydney before His
Honour Judge Edwards assisted by Charles Zachariah Lindberg and
John Mann Hart, Assessors, into the circumstances attending the
grounding of the British Ship "Koraaga".
The Court, having carefully inquired into the circumstances
attending the above mentioned shipping casualty, comes to the
decision following:-
1. The British Ship "Koraaga", Official Number 151,981, whilst
on a voyage from Beecroft Head to Watamoli Fishing Ground, grounded
on Bass Point on the Coast of New South Wales at about 10.50 on the
night of the 9th September, 1931.
2. The vessel was well found and provided with the necessary
life-saving appliances.
3. The night was dark, with drizzling rain, the wind was light
from the north-east.
4. The vessel sank and was lost.
5. The Court is of opinion that the grounding and subsequent
foundering was owing to the negligence of the master in not taking
a 4 point bearing with regard to the Kiama light.
6. The Court orders that the servitude certificate of James
Reid, master of the "Koraaga," numbered 05986, and issued at Buckie
in 1907, be suspended for a period of one month from the 9th day of
September, 1931.
Dated at Sydney this ninth day of October, 1931.
D. S. EDWARDS, Judge.
