"MACGREGOR."
FINDING of a Court of Inquiry held at Butticaloa, Ceylon, on the 15th February 1881, into the wreck of the S.S. "MACGREGOR," of Liverpool, at Comare, on the 14th January 1881.
The Court is of opinion that the wreck of the steamship "Macgregor," of Liverpool, was not owing to any mismanagement on the part of the captain and officers of the ship, but to unforeseen misfortune in her having struck on an unknown reef at sea during hazy weather.
Captain John Clark Main, in command at the time, acted with wise discretion in beaching her, and thus saved the lives and property on board.
The Court has, therefore, much pleasure in returning his certificate, and exonerates Captain Main from all censure or blame in the loss of his ship.
