"MOHAKA" (S.S.)

REPORT of a Court of Inquiry held at Blenheim, New Zealand, into the casualty to the steamship "MOHAKA," of Auckland.

1. That the official number of the said ship, called the "Mohaka," is 75,142, of which John Symons is master, who holds a certificate of service, and which ship belonged to Thomas Eckford, mate of the "Mohaka," and Michael Clark, a fireman on board of her.

2. That the loss or damage herein more particularly mentioned happened on the 4th day of March 1881, at about 1/2 past 3 o'clock in the morning on the said 4th of March.

3. That the loss or damage appears, by the evidence, to have been caused by a breach of discipline on the part of Thomas Eckford, mate of the vessel, by entrusting her to a seaman instead of the proper officer, John Symons.

4. That the nature of the loss or damage done was hatches washed away and starting of stern post, and bilged on port side; that the vessel is insured for 450l.; that the "Mohaka" is a screw steam boat, cutter rigged; her port of registry is Auckland; her registered tonnage 20 tons; that no lives were lost through the wreck.

And I, the said resident magistrate and assessors, further state our opinion on the matter aforesaid to be as follows:—

That the mate in consequence of the breach of discipline aforesaid should have his certificate suspended during the Governor's pleasure, and we hereby suspend it accordingly. No costs are directed to be paid by any party to the inquiry.

The mate's certificate is hereby ordered to be delivered up for said cancellation.
