"MARGARET JANE."

REPORT and Decision of the Marine Board of New South Wales in the matter of the abandonment and wreck of the "MAGARET JANE," Official No. 73,307.

An inquiry was held by the Marine Board into the cause of the abandonment and wreck of this vessel, and they ascertained that she was a topsail schooner of 68 tons, registered in Sydney, owned by the master, and insured for £700.

The "Margaret Jane" was on a voyage, in ballast, from Sydney to Port Macquarie, and finding it impracticable to cross the bar at that place through the heavy sea running at the time, the master bore up and anchored in Trial Bay on Monday, the 28th ultimo. On Wednesday, the 30th, the sea and gale from the eastward increasing, the second anchor was let go, and cables veered to 60 fathoms on the starboard and 55 on the port anchor; a distress signal was then made, and the prison authorities sent off a whale boat and landed the crew. At 6 p.m. on the 31st the schooner parted her cables, drifted on to the beach, and became a total wreck.

The Board reported that the loss of the "Margaret Jane" was caused by the vessel being cast on shore and broken up in Trial Bay, during heavy easterly weather. Although the Board is not satisfied with the conduct of John Smith, the master, who, with the concurrence of his crew, signalled to the shore for assistance and abandoned his vessel in the prison whale boat, without striking his topmast or doing otherwise than mooring her before the heavy weather developed itself, they do not see their way to charge him with default with the view of depriving him of his certificate.
