| Unique ID: | 10148 | | Description: | Close shot of two airmen loading one of the pontoons on the seaplane, Mercury, with mail bags. The aircraft sits ontop of the flying boat, Maia, connected by a frame. As the composite is checked and loaded a figure can be seen in the Mercury's cockpit and below the pontoons the legs of other airmen can be seen. A large propelllor tip on the left is from the Maia. Mercury was launched from Maia in mid air when part way across the north Atlantic carrying 1000lb of mail, this meant that it did not use any fuel for take off and could therefore travel longer distances. The experiment was only carried out once despite it being a success. | | Creator: | Unknown | | Date: | Unknown | | Copyright: | Southampton City Council | | Partner: | SCC Museums | | Partner ID: | M20060 (Phillips 1635) |
