Another job we didn't like doing was going across being sent across to Fyffe's banana boats. No-one liked that job because in those days bananas came across on the stem. Consequently... there's all kinds of insects, snakes, and all kinds of things and these things used to frighten the life out of a lot of people. And one of the tricks men used to play if you were carrying a stem of bananas was someone behind you would get a piece of straw and tickle the back of your neck and of course panic stations then. But ... we really did have plenty of insects and ... after the war when bananas first started, used to come out on elevators from the ships hold and come down to moving elevators on the quayside the men used to take them off and put them on the man's shoulder and he used to carry it along to the wagon.
