With regards to colleagues within your own catering business,
yes I suppose so. You see ... you had a sort of pecking order, you
had men who had been at sea all their life who were proper seamen
shall we say, there were men that had been on the Mary during the
war, and there were those men that had gone to the Queen Mary when
she was first launched, they were the elite, creme de la creme, and
then there was us, the ex-servicemen that were just dodging around
finding a hole to get into because I think the majority of us after
a while for one reason or another, left the sea, and it was just
that period of time where people wanted to just adjust themselves,
plus the fact that we were single, we were getting a fair amount of
money and being ex-servicemen we hadn't been used to that money,
and of course we were having the good things of life which were not
prevailing ... in this country.
