My father belonged to the Transport and General Workers Union,
he wasn't an active member. I think more 'cos the fear than
anything else and victimisation. He couldn't take any active part
although he would have loved to. And when I went in there it was a
very very intimidating business. Men couldn't speak, they couldn't
voice their opinion for fear of being left when the next call was
available. If you said anything to the foreman or superintendent
that was derogatory to the firm or anything like that, you were
just simply left and no explanation needed, you were just left.
Never mind your capabilities or your work potential, you were just
left, for just opening your mouth.
