When the war finished, of course I was working then in the Post Office as a messenger boy, the ships were coming back and there'd (laughs) ... you'd never seen so many ships in your life. Then of course there was the ex-German ones, ... what they'd taken over, and there was the old Teutonic which had been in 'er day was the White Star line record breaker across the Atlantic. She'd come back from troopin', and she was in a sorry mess, I went aboard her. Oh I supposed they gradually straightened themselves out and of course the shipping companies were grabbing at anything they could lay their hands on to main ... try and maintain some sort of services.
