Question: Could you describe what the docks were
like?
Oh, well, of course everything was all of a bustle, the docks is
quiet now to what it was in those days, I mean the first thing as
you come into the dock, you see masses and masses of people for a
start, and there'd be trains crossing the road, boat trains and
goods trains coming in and out, there'd be all sorts of noise and
there'd be ships blowing their whistles, and there'd be stevedores
right left and centre, there'd be coal people unloading coal on
various ships, and there'd be troop ships there would be Lascars in
and out and you know the dock was absolutely bustling, it was
alive, it was a big place of interest, there was always something
different going on and there was always something diff...sort of
draw your attention away from looking at the thing that you were
looking at now, there was always something to look at. It was
a very interesting place and as I say it was always a place of
bustle but to go down there now the place is absolutely...well so
quiet it is unbelievable
