River Itchen

The River Itchen flows 27 miles (43 km) from north Hampshire to Southampton Water. Many small shipping industries and communities grew up along the river.
Itchen Wharves

The River Itchen marks the eastern edge of Southampton`s port. Scattered along the river were many small wharves and quays where boats were repaired and maintained.

For many years the only way for vehicles to cross the River Itchen was several miles outside Southampton and was inconvenient for residents on the other bank of the river. The solution was a floating bridge.
